I was in Pondicherry and Goa (north). January is part of the peak season, so prices are bit expensive. February, i think the demand decreases. Anjuna y Baga are nice beaches but crowded on weekends. Nice seafood. Order goan curry and pomfret tandoori

Pondicherry (Pondy) doesnt have beaches, you have to go father nort or south if you want to find a nice place for swimming. Mahaballipuran -between Chenai and Pondy- is a very nice place: good beaches, nice seafood and many ruins at the coast. I suggest that place. Pondy has a nice night life but the french area is barely 2 streets even long.

In contrast, Panaji (in Goa) has a very long area of portuguese buildings. Nice walkings and you can find ederly persons speaking in portuguese. I slept in Calangute beach but one alternative is to take a hostel in Panaji. Buses are cheap and take around 1 or 2 hours to the beaches. Fort Aguada is not totally fantastic.

Sounds fun. Pondicherry seems a convenient place for the short trip from Bangalore. Any progress about the plan?

Try Gokarna , It's Fabulous :-) It's Quiet , Calm Waters , Cheap Shacks and Good Food and it's not too commercial so you won't have people troubling you . It's just before Goa . I personally love that place :)

Gokarna looks perfect ...but it could be too far from the airport. I'll do some research.

Best "secret" spots for a nice week end on the beach...

Goa ->
Agonda Beach / Stay at Turtle Lounge or HO2

Kerala ->
Fly to Mangalore (early morning flight) and go to Neeleshwar Hermitage (north Kerala)
Fly to Kochi, head south and go to Marari Beach near Allepey
Fly to Trivandrum, head south and stay at the Somatheeram
